Is it okay to go to the GYM before 18?

Gymming is trending! From young school-going boys and girls to elderly people, all want to join in on this trend. We are getting more and more applications from pre-teens to join our cause at VYAM. But is it sensible to work your body at this young age? Is sport enough to lay the foundation of a fit body later?

Now, it’s a little more intricate than a closed question. Are we talking about early teens? Children of 14 years of age or less? We’ve all heard conventions such as “Children should not exercise since it is unhealthy.” They should instead take on games, sports, and other forms of physical activities. The incorrect workouts might distort their flexible and sensitive bones. Weightlifting may even cause a decrease in their growth in terms of height. Children should only engage in aerobic and freehand activities, even if they join gyms. These norms are not all baseless. Teenagers are at a developmental stage in which their bodies experience numerous changes; hence, a certain age cannot be defined. However, it is advised that you begin weight training when you are 17-18 years old when your muscles are mature enough to withstand the strain. However, many kids today, aged 14-15, begin coming to the gym and undertaking rigorous workouts in order to appear good, which can be harmful. Make sure the dynamics of your decision start working out.

But generalizing these prejudices throughout the population isn’t ideal either. For instance, our most recent joiner, Achintya is 16 and battling obesity all the while in danger of other weight-related diseases. For him, a habit of working out under supervision is the exact direction needed to avoid extensive gymming at a later stage. No one age may be regarded as the appropriate age to begin weight training. It is more dependent on the individual. So, sure, you may go to the gym before the age of 18! Regular physical activity and exercise are critical for general health and well-being. They can aid in the maintenance of a healthy weight, the prevention of chronic illnesses, and the enhancement of mental health and mood. It is very vital to become active at a young age. It can aid in the development of strong bones and muscles, as well as reduce your risk of obesity and chronic diseases later in life. So, go to the gym, go on a run, or join a sports team. Seek expert assistance. Establish limits. Maintain vigilance. Just be sure you move and keep active!

You must be thinking if we advocate gymming in early adolescence after hearing so many advantages. Not for everyone, we don’t, Eram Rizvi (BSM), a physical trainer at LDA Stadium in Lucknow, says that physical exercise is important for adolescent development, but that children under the age of 17 should avoid heavy weightlifting programs unless absolutely necessary. And we at VYAM wholeheartedly support it. They are likely to injure themselves unless they are monitored. Before indulging in any intense workouts or activities, precautions must be taken, and advice must be sought.

Here are some of the reasons why children and teens should avoid going to the gym:

  • Young teenagers who engage in strenuous workouts or weight training are more prone to develop muscle weariness.
  • A rigorous exercise needs adequate nutrition. Teenagers usually disregard the need for a healthy and balanced diet, preferring unhealthy snacks after exercise, which are harmful to their bodies.
  • When you join a gym, it is evident that you want to push yourself harder each time, which increases the possibility of serious gym injuries.
  • Teens are especially affected by Physique Dysmorphic Disorder when they witness their peers or other teenagers with immaculate bodies and construction.

Teenagers should participate in sports and organized exercise programs that include muscular and bone development activities. Weight training, of course, may assist improve strength and avoiding sports injuries when done under the supervision of an experienced adult. Teens may profit from almost any activity they want if they have the opportunity and enthusiasm. Everyone benefits from physical fitness. Maintaining your health can help you improve your academic performance, raise your confidence, prevent obesity, and reduce your risk of serious illnesses (such as heart disease and diabetes). Regular physical activity can also assist children in learning to deal with the physical and emotional challenges they face on a daily basis. It is totally up to them whether they engage in sports or exercise at the gym. So next time, your young champion wants to join the gym, try to find the motive behind it. It’s alright to join workouts for the right reasons under adult supervision, and you never know, it might just be the direction they need for improving their routine!
